1929 HAROLD CUMMINS

A professor of Anatomy at Tulane University, New Orleans, Cummins did an extensive amount of research on the formation and development of the volar pads on the fetus.

In 1929, he published a paper, The Topographic History of Volas Pads in the Human Embryo.

In this paper, he describes how the physical aspects of the volar pads, including location, differential growth, shape and size all affect friction ridge development and pattern configuration. He also stressed that the degree of influence was dependent upon the stage of regression of the volar pads at the time of development.

In 1943 Cummins co-authored a book with colleague Charles Midlo, entitled Fingerprints, Palms and Soles – An Introduction to Dermatoglyphics, which provides an extensive, yet comprehensive overview of all available material on the subject of dermatoglyphics.
