1628-1694 MARCELLO MALPIGHI

In 1686, Marcello Malpighi, a Professor of Anatomy at the University of Bologna, made enquiries into the functions and morphology of the skin. His papers focused on the function and structure of friction ridge skin. His work was accepted with enthusiasm in the scientific community and so outstanding that a layer of skin (Stratum Malpighi) is named after him.
