SCENE EXAMINER

Scene Examiners form the core of our Forensic Services network.  Responsible for preserving the scenes of major incidents and crimes, they recover evidence that will later be examined by our Forensic Scientists and experts. 

Responsibilities of the Scene Examiner include:

  • Recording a scene
  • Conducting a structured and sequential examination of the scene for physical and trace evidence
  • Gathering evidence
  • Submitting gathered evidence to the laboratories for scientific analysis
  • Reporting findings to the Procurator Fiscal
  • Giving evidence in Judicial proceedings

Scene Examiners must be dedicated and have the ability to think logically, with qualifications in one of the following:

  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) in Photographic Studies
  • Degree in forensic - related subject
  • Diploma in Crime Scene Examination  

The training of Scene of Crime Staff in Scotland is to nationally accepted levels.  Additional specialist training skills are provided in such areas as chemical, biological, radiological or nuclear (CBRN) incidents, Post Bomb Scene Management, Fire and Explosion Investigation and Disaster management. All staff are encouraged to reinforce their acquired competencies through registration with the Council for Registration of Forensic Practitioners (CRFP)
